Biography
TruCarr was born Darren Carr in Watts, Los Angeles (his mother's family from Louisiana, his father from Michigan) and the name is a promise before it's a brand: “I was just like I'ma keep it a hundred every time, so I'ma call myself Tru, and to make it authentic I just put my last name on it.” He doesn't write lyrics down; he freestyles and punches in from whatever the day gave him, a street reporter's method with a melodic hook sensibility.
The breakout was “Outside”: its remix with Blueface carried it far enough that Wack 100 signed him to 100 Entertainment in partnership with eOne Music. The record that matters most is heavier: after losing his young daughter Journee in 2016, he made the 2020 tape “Tru Forever (The Journee)” as her tribute, and he has called that loss his primary creative motivation. “Don't take life for granted” is the line that recurs across his interviews. The family runs deep in LA rap too, he has recorded with Drakeo the Ruler, whose son is TruCarr's cousin.
The 2024–2026 catalog has cemented him as one of the more prolific voices out of South Los Angeles: “Ghetto” in its original and sped-up edits, “Keep It Real,” “Buggin,” and “Turn Your Trap Up,” with a deep feature run on “Like E-40” (Rowdy Racks), “Factual” (Ralfy the Plug), and “What I See” (G Perico). Off record he runs the ClockedIn merchandise line. He records at Audio Lounge Studios in Los Angeles.
